Acquisition of Access Easement - Bexar County
Approximately 0.1 Acre at Government Canyon State Natural Area

I. Executive Summary: The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff has been working with an adjacent private landowner on an emergency access easement that would allow greater access for first responders to a remote area of the Government Canyon State Natural Area (SNA).
II. Discussion: The 12,116-acre Government Canyon SNA was acquired by the City of San Antonio to protect recharge of the Edwards Aquifer and was transferred to TPWD for the creation of the SNA beginning in the mid-1990s. Local park staff has been working with the neighboring subdivision to the north of the SNA on a plan that would provide an emergency access easement through the subdivision property to a public road. Staff of the SNA believes this easement acquisition will increase the overall safety and protection of SNA resources in the event first responders need to legally access the northern area of the SNA.
III. Recommendation: The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:
“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire an approximately 0.1 acre easement in Bexar County for additional access to Government Canyon State Natural Area.”
